What does “Take 20” mean?

The concept behind the term ‘Take 20’ actually comes from Dungeons & Dragons. I know what you’re thinking—how does this relate to tutoring?

In the game, the highest roll of the dice you can possibly make is a 20. The odds of rolling a perfect score on a first attempt are pretty low; but when you have plenty of time and there are no penalties for failure, you can do something called ‘taking 20’.

This means trying until you get it right, and assumes you will fail many times before succeeding. Taking 20 takes longer, but your chance of success is absolutely certain.

Most students come to me because they’ve encountered a challenge. This is the perfect opportunity for them to practice, with no penalty for failure. By the end of a session, I want each student to feel like their chance of success is absolutely certain.

    Test Prep

    Test preparation is offered on an as-needed basis throughout the year for anything from quizzes to tests to exams. However, more specialized testing preparation is also available for tests like the SAT and ACT or AP courses that require more comprehensive and lengthy preparation that covers a wider range of material.
